Where is Nassau?

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea is a group of 700 islands that comprise part of the West Indies.  Officially known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas or more colloquially as the Bahamas, this is a country with a tantalizing climate and history.  It is a glorious combination of sandy beaches, historic towns, a British sensibility overlaid with a Caribbean and American flavor.

It’s made up of many things drawn from the old and new worlds and yet is thrillingly unique.  In the heart of all of these islands stands Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas, the focus of government, shopping and history of this vibrant country.

A short hop from Continental USA, you will find yourself established in one of the opulent Bahamas vacation rentals, kicking back in a holiday destination that is truly a world apart.  Let’s do a countdown of the six unique features that charm guests who visit these shores each year.

Shopping In Nassau

You may be a mere hop, skip and flight from the USA, but once you step onto New Providence island, home to the capital city of Nassau, you are officially ‘abroad’.

Duty Free Shopping

From a shopping perspective, what this means is that you are able to indulge in some rather splendid Duty-Free shopping.  With a ticket price of up to 40% less than the retail cost back home, you can buy everything from jeweler to clothing,  electronics to cigars.

Crystal Court

Nassau’s Crystal Court is one of the shopping malls that is home to such delectable brands as Gucci, Versace and Bulgari.  From one of our vacation rentals Nassau Bahamas, why not build a day of retail therapy into your itinerary.

As a delightful alternative to the obvious big label shopping, Nassau is famous for its local art scene.  Unique artworks, sculpture and clothing can be picked up to bring home to adorn your home or as meaningful gifts.

Bay Street Market

The Bay Street Straw Market in Downtown Nassau or the Festival Place by the cruise port are great places to trawl through the diverse local vendors.  Enjoy a coffee or casual lunch and watch the world drift by.

For any of you from the US who are partial to some Cuban cigars, do remember that you aren’t permitted to bring these into the US.

That shouldn’t stop you from purchasing a few to enjoy as you lounge on the terrace of one of the private and luxurious Nassau Bahamas villas, sipping some quality brandy as you blow smoke rings into the fragrant night air.

Palm Beach Nassau

History of Nassau

Nassau is fit for a King.  Literally.  Edward VIII, King of the British Empire for less than a year in 1936, famously abdicated to marry the woman he loved.  As the newly styled Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Edward and Wallis took over the Governorship of the Bahamas for the duration of WWII.

British empire

What was a somewhat conservative colonial outpost of the British Empire was thrust into the international limelight.  The most photographed couple in the world (prior to Harry and Megan, that is!) brought a jet-set glamour to Nassau.

The Governor’s residence was upgraded and redecorated, befitting the household of a senior royal.  If you look at some of the gorgeous photographs of the 1930s and 1940s, you see a glamourous world of polo, golf, sailing and beach picnics – a world away from the turmoil and rationing that was a daily feature of European life at that time.

Historic Centre

Today, you can stroll around the historic centre of Nassau and look at these ice cream coloured buildings – many hundreds of years old, visit castle-like forts, old churches.  Influences that draw together British colonial rule, French and Spanish occupations are interwoven to create the present and unified face of modern-day Bahamas.

Guided tours

It’s easy to arrange a wonderful guided tour that will whisk you from one of the exquisite villas in Nassau.  Everything from fortifications along with ports, like Fort Charlotte to Clifton Heritage Park, to the Queen’s Staircase, is easily seen as you stroll around Nassau.  The topography yields so many picturesque views—the ultimate backdrops to those enviable vacation selfies.

Nassau weather

Weather makes a vacation.  It is the framework around which we build our days of leisure.  If you are lucky to be travelling to stay at one of the gorgeous Nassau villas that Exceptional Villas represent, you know that the weather is going to deliver just what you need.

300 days of sunshine

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, the Bahamas is located in that wonderful pocket of the Caribbean that enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures that range from mid 80 F / late 25 C in Summer to 78 F / 20 C in Winter.

The islands do sit within the hurricane belt but rarely see any devastating damage.  The winds seem to sidestep the Bahamas, making ground in Cuba and along the Florida seaboard.

Rainy season

There is a defined rainy season in the Bahamas that can see a grey and wet day, but it quickly clears to restore Nassau to its usual sunny splendor.  Onshore breezes keep the islands cool in the evenings, making it very comfortable to sleep in one of the beautifully appointed villas for rent in Nassau, Bahamas.

Escape the cold

If you are keen to get away from those grim northern winters, then a vacation to Nassau might be the perfect antidote to cold frosty mornings.  Or perhaps you are just keen to loll about in a swimsuit by your private pool or under a shading palm tree.
