WINES AND FOOD OF CROATIA

Whilst Croatian wines are not as famous as those of some of its European neighbours in Burgundy, Bordeaux or Tuscany, Croatia produces some incredibly great wines from some of the oldest vineyards in the world. The vineyards were first planted by ancient Greek settlers 2,400 years ago. Most of the wine produced in Croatia is not exported, which is another reason for its lesser-known status.

The island of Hvar where some of our villas in Croatia have their location is home to the world’s oldest vineyard. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site called Stari Grad Plain. Grapes have been grown here since 400 BC.

Croatian wines use many native varieties in their production, but many of the more recent wines use Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

Croatian cuisine is equally excellent, offering a wide variety of traditional dishes. Croatian food has many influences by both its neighbouring countries and by the different nations that have occupied Croatia throughout history. Whilst dining out in Croatia, expect to see influences from Austrian, Hungary, and Turkey but with a local interpretation and taste. Some of the most popular local dishes include Black Risotto, Stuffed Peppers, Istrian Soup, Oily Fish, Roasted Turkey, Zagreb Schnitzel and the freshest of seafood imaginable.

Based on our years of experience, we are delighted to present some of our most popular Villas in Croatia:
