ST THOMAS BEACHES

The island of St Thomas blessed with many things, and one of the most noteworthy is without a doubt, its stunning beaches. More than forty beaches line its shores. Many of the beaches are the epitome of the perfect Robinson Crususe paradise beach with soft white sands, swaying palm trees and clear and calm turquoise waters. Plenty of the sandy coves that surround St Thomas offer a variety of watersports such as windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkelling.

Magens Bay which has its location on the North Side of St Thomas is one of the islands most famous. Just to the West of Magens Bay is Hull Bay which is one of the most popular areas for surfers. The East side of the island is also the location for many of the islands most famous beaches such as Lindquist Beach, Coki Point, Sapphire Beach and Secret Harbour. Home to many beautiful beaches and coves, such as Brewers Bay and Lindberg Bay the West side of St Thomas is equally blessed. Beaches on the Southside include Bolongo Bay, Morning Star and Limetree Beach.

The bottom line is that St Thomas has incredible beaches lining all its shores which guarantees that whichever St Thomas Villa Rental you choose, you will never be far from one of its beautiful coves. Of course, many of our St Thomas Villa Rentals have their location directly on the beach, but we do find that many of our clients love to explore many of the other stunning beaches. And there is a beach for everyone on St Thomas. Whether you feel like spending a day in wild beauty and solitude or on one of the islands famous bays with lively beach bars and restaurants, the choice is yours.

ST THOMAS HISTORY

Christopher Colombus first discovered St Thomas in 1493 although the natives of the Ciboney Tribes, the Arawaks and the Caribs populated St Thomas well before that. There is evidence that Indian natives habituated St Thomas in the late 1500s followed by The Spanish and The Danish in the 1600s.

More recently the United States hoisted their flag on the three Virgin Islands of St Thomas, St Croix and St John on March 31st 1917. Today, St Thomas and the other two islands remain under United States rule.

The capital of the three islands is Charlotte Amalie which has its location on St Thomas. It was in the 1950s that St Thomas first became famous for tourists. Today it is one of the Caribbean's top tourist destinations and one of the busiest cruise ship ports.

They will be on hand to help with car rentals, ground transportation, restaurant reservations, excursions and all the beautiful things to do and see. Here are some of their top recommendations.

MAGENS BAY

Magens Bay is one of the most beautiful and consequently most popular beaches on the island of St Thomas. The beach is a perfect U-shape with soft white sands and crystal clear waters. Along the beach is a snack bar, sailboat rentals, shop and showers.

The beach can occasionally get quite busy and especially on the weekends and is an excellent spot to go to if you love a lively and buzzy atmosphere. For those who like a bit more solitude, either end of the beach is generally pretty quiet.

Just inland from Magens Bay is the Magens Bay Arboretum which is a botanical garden with a beautiful selection of native and imported plants.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE

Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the USVI as well as being the centre of commerce for the island. St Thomas’ capital filled with stores that provide everything from luxury items to simple teeshirts is most definitely worth a visit. Vendor's Plaza is one of the most popular areas for bargains, and exciting art galleries scatter around the shopping district. However, Charlotte Amalie offers more than just shopping.

Fort Christian which is a short walk from the centre, is a fascinating military construction that was built in 1672 by the Danish who controlled St Thomas at that time. Today Fort Christian operates as a museum which displays interesting artefacts from St Thomas' history. Fort Christian is the childhood home of Camille Pissarro, who is one of the world’s most famous French Impressionist artists.

Just across the street from Fort Christian is the local Legislature. It is of great interest as it was the place where the transfer of power occurred from the Danish to the U.S. At the time, it cost the U.S. government US$25.00 million to buy St Thomas.

The St Thomas Synagogue is another point of interest in Charlotte Amalie. The synagogue has served as the spiritual home to St Thomas’ Jewish population since 1833. The St Thomas Synagogue is the second oldest in the western hemisphere.

Other historic buildings include Blackbeard's Castle which is a watchtower built in 1679 and the local government's neo-classical administration office.

Last but not least, Charlotte Amalie has an excellent selection of restaurants and cafes. Our concierge team are delighted to advise you on some of the best ones to choose.

HAVENSIGHT

Havensight is the location for the St Thomas cruise ship dock. Even if you are not arriving by cruise, Havensight is worth a visit for its vast shopping area. The area stretches from Havensight Mall to Port of Sale Mall. There is also an extensive selection of restaurants from fast food to fine dining options.

St Thomas has hundreds of duty-free shops, and consequently, jewellery, watches, cameras, crystal, perfumes, makeup and alcohol are all particularly good value. The area also has a great selection of boutiques

HASSEL ISLAND HISTORIC DISTRICT

The Hassel island Historic District is a separate island located just off the coast of Charlotte Amalie. It is well worth a visit for both its natural beauty and historical interest. The island is part of the Virgin Islands National Park and is therefore protected.

It is possible to spend a full day here exploring the Danish Military forts, the steam-engine marine railway, snorkelling, exploring the local wildlife or just relaxing on its stunning beach.

CORAL WORLD OCEAN PARK

The Coral World Ocean Park is a beautiful spot for families and anyone interested in marine life. It is an underwater observatory located 100 feet offshore and 15 feet below the surface. From here, visitors can observe the colourful fish and extensive coral.

The price of the entry includes 21 aquariums located onshore featuring a wide variety of sea life. There is also an opportunity to feed stingrays and a swim with sea lions, sharks and turtles.

GOLF

The Tom Fazio designed Mahogany Run golf course is one of the best in the Caribbean. It is an 18-hole championship course. The course is breathtakingly beautiful with views along the coastlines. One of its most outstanding features is the Devil's Triangle.

SKYRIDE

St Thomas is one of the only Caribbean Islands to feature a gondola style Skyride. It whisks visitors 700 feet above the town of Charlotte Amalie to Paradise Point. From here, the views over the coastline and harbour are lovely.

TREE LIMIN EXTREME ZIP LINE TOUR

The Tree Limin Zip Line tour is one of the most exhilarating things you can do while visiting St Thomas. Limin in the Caribbean means hanging out and in this case, hanging out in the spectacular rain forest of St Peter Mountain.

Expect to reach speeds of up to 35 miles an hour as you zoom from one part of the forest to the other as well as experience breathtaking views of Magens Bay, the island of St John and some of the nearby British Virgin Islands.

The course is certified with the Association of Challenge Course Technology so you can rest assured you are in safe hands.

DAY TRIP TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.

St Thomas is fortunate to have its location beside the equally beautiful British Virgin Islands. The BVI Attractions are many. The tour includes a visit to the Virgin Gorda Baths which comprises of stunningly beautiful grottoes, arches and tidal pools and a stop at the beautiful island of Jost Van Dyke. Here you will be able to swim, snorkel, relax and enjoy a delicious lunch. Our concierge team can arrange a private boat or organize a group tour.
