Lopud 1483 is a historic 15th-century monastery, once home to Franciscan monks, which has been meticulously restored over the last twenty years and is now available exclusively. Step back in time as you explore the 5-bedroom monastery, fortress, and stunning gardens. The property is set on a stunning seafront location and is rented on a half-board basis with a private chef and full services provided. Constructed in 1483 as a cloistered sanctuary for quiet contemplation and healing, this medieval fortified monastery has been sensitively restored to retain its integrity and authentic feeling, under the guidance of Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza.

This historic home features multiple terraces and sun decks on which to relax, providing the most incredible sea views. Guests have access to the water via steps that lead down directly to the sea with access to swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding. There is a private boat available to take you on local excursions and to nearby islands. Guests can explore, visit beaches, go fishing, and enjoy sunset drinks. The team is on hand to help arrange activities and experiences. Lopud 1483 is also a place of healing therefore private spa massages, yoga, and personal training can be arranged. Your onsite staff and concierge team can assist with pre-booking these activities. Location
The location of the property is idyllic being right on the sea close to a variety of cafes and restaurants nearby. The property is set on the northernmost tip of the car-free Croatian island of Lopud in the heart of the Elaphiti islands. For added convenience, the property is located only 7 miles from the city of Dubrovnik and you can reach the villa within one hour from Dubrovnik airport by boat.

Lopud is the second largest of the Elaphiti islands, situated between Koločep and Šipan, and is feted for its sandy beaches and quiet pace of life. The island’s natural beauty is preserved by its car-free policy and visitors can follow the island paths through lush vegetation either by foot or bicycle. The sunsets are extraordinary from clear skies to stormy days. The view from the monastery is undisturbed except for some islands in the distance. Enjoy direct access to the sea, boat trips, yoga, and spa treatments. The monastery, topped by a Renaissance church spire, is interspersed with medicinal and sacred gardens, all enveloped within the rampart walls of the fortress that doubles up as an event venue.

Staff
While staying at Lopud 1483 you will be personally cared for by the wonderful team of staff on a half-board basis. Some guests never want to leave. Your gourmet chef will cater to all your needs and dietary requirements. He can prepare the most delicious meals using traditional Croatian ingredients such as oysters from nearby bays which can be served outdoors, or in the formal dining room or Old Kitchen, with its ancient open fireplace and bread oven, which is now used to make fresh pizzas.

Bedrooms
Lopud 1483 comprises 5 luxury suites sleeping 10 guests. You will find a wonderful collection of unique artworks displayed in each room. The home is ideal for 5 couples or families traveling together looking for the perfect villa in Croatia. The 5 bedrooms have been converted from 13 originally restored cells. Each is equipped with its own bathroom and windows facing the sea or the gardens. Wooden ceilings, windows, and floors complemented by the historical plaster create a timeless combination of the historical and the contemporary.

A Living Art Gallery
Behind the cloistered walls of Lopud 1483, guests will be able to live in the manner of a great art collector. The Thyssen-Bornemisza family have amassed over four generations, an impressive collection that spans between the thirteenth to twenty-first centuries and was said to be the largest collection after the Queen of England’s. The selection of works in the Monastery includes original Renaissance and Gothic furniture as well as decorative arts and paintings, most of which adorned the Baron’s home in the Villa Favorita in Lugano and are being presented for the first time in decades. The whole experience is designed to offer guests the opportunity to “live like a collector” in a style that is reminiscent of the taste and culture that has spread over generations of this extraordinary family of philanthropists.

Wellness

During your stay, you can also experience the Sacred Garden which is located between the fortress and the monastery. Here you will find a pathway consisting of 9 stops that emerged from the four elements of art, architecture, spirituality, and healing along with deep local historical roots. Guests are invited to experience rather than consume its restorative power by immersing their senses in the plants and minerals, preferably barefoot for a more grounded effect according to traditions of Saint Francis of Assisi.
