WHICH COLORADO SKI AND MOUNTAIN RESORT SHOULD I CHOOSE?

If it is your first time visiting Colorado, it might be a challenge to pick the perfect ski town. We are pleased to provide a little detail on each which will help you to narrow your choice down. Our expert team are also on hand to help point you in the right direction.

BRECKENRIDGE

Breckenridge is one of Colorados most popular ski resorts. With its location just 90 minutes west of Denver, Breckenridge is also one of the most convenient Colorado Ski Resorts and one of the oldest towns. It was first discovered by gold diggers in 1859 and became a thriving gold rush town for many years. Today the centre of Breckenridge provides a wonderful reminder of a town from the old wild west. The streets are atmospheric and full of gorgeous shops, restaurants and bars. It is one of Colorado's most historic villages, and much of the older areas of the town are protected lending a lovely olde worlde atmosphere to Breckenridge.

The skiing is, of course, unreal with five high mountains to choose from offering everything from wonderfully easy beginners slopes to challenging double diamonds for the best of expert skiers. Breckenridge offers a whole host of activities. It is possible to go hiking, snowshoeing, biking, tubing, white water rafting, sledging, ziplining, husky sledging, shopping, wine tasting, snowmobiling, ice-skating or even take a gold historical gold mining tour.

There are also lots do to and see for non-skiers in Breckenridge. A 15-minute drive brings you to Silverthorne Outlet Mall, and there is also a daily walking tour of the town and a great theatre. Breckenridge has something for everyone, and it is, therefore, an excellent choice for families, extended families and adults wishing to have a fun-filled vacation in Colorado.

VAIL

Vail is considered North Americas most popular ski resort and for an excellent reason. Firstly Vail has one of the singularly most significant ski areas on the world incorporating almost 200 runs over 5,289 acres and more than 30 efficient lifts. On top of that Vail has a substantial off-piste back bowl area perfect for expert skiers. When you combine the back bowls with the groomed runs, the area is more than 8,000 acres in size. Vail was also one of the first ski resort in North America to welcome snowboarders. Vail is also just a 20-minute drive to Beaver Creek and 45 minutes drive to Breckenridge.

The Vail ski resort in Colorado

But the town of Vail does not stop with these spectacular statistics. Vail is the location for some of the best and most luxurious Colorado Vacation Rentals and 5-star hotels. Vail has an equally impressive number of great restaurants, spas, and things to do for non-skiers. Just some of these include The Gerald R Ford Amphitheatre, children's Garden, art programme, 200 shops, ski and snowboard museum, farmers market, hiking ziplining and a vast number of cycling trails.

Vail is also home to many wonderful festivals during the year. Some of the most famous of those are the Vail Film Festival, The Burton US Open and The Bravo Vail Music Festival. Vail is a wonderful destination in both summer and winter. We recommend Vail for all levels of skiers, and it is perfect for families, couples and groups of adults wishing to have an exhilarating mountain vacation. Over half the runs at Vail are black diamonds making it one of the worlds best ski resorts for expert and off-piste skiers.

BEAVER CREEK

The gated town of Beaver Creek is a smaller, more intimate and more relaxed town then Vail. While Vail has accommodation options for all clients, Beaver Creek tends to cater for the super-luxury market and consequently the Beaver Creek Vacation Rentals are all stunning.

On top of that, the mountain has an insanely good piste grooming operation making the on-slope skiing incredibly smooth. The runs resemble incredibly soft corduroy and make even the double black diamonds a little easier. 60 Per cent of the runs at Beaver Creek are either blue or green.

The entrance to the Beaver Creek ski resort

Vail and Beaver Creek have their locations close by to each other, so it is possible to stay in one and ski in the other. The town of Beaver Creek runs a complimentary shuttle to the nearby town of Avon which is also very pretty. One of the lovely things that Beaver Creek is famous for is their tradition of giving guests complimentary chocolate chip cookies at 3 pm each day. It is a beautiful way to end an exhilarating day on the mountain.

Besides skiing, Beaver Creek has a lot to offer both summer and winter. Just some of the great activities include ice-skating, snowshoeing, shopping, hiking and sledging. Beaver Creek village is charming with lots of lovely shops, restaurants and bars. It is also well known for its excellent selection of art galleries and luxury spas.

So if you feel like a day off from skiing, there is plenty of ways to spend a relaxed and fun day. It also has a large selection of luxury Colorado Cabin Rentals, making it an ideal choice for families and even extended families. Many of these Colorado Rentals have hot tubs, fire pits, home theatres, massive fireplaces and lots of space.

TELLURIDE

Telluride may be slightly less well known than its counterparts such as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge and Beavercreek but it is every bit as wonderful with tons of incredible skiing to boot. Many experts believe that Telluride is the best ski resort in the United States. It is certainly one of the most atmospheric and scenic Colorado vacation destinations with a great selection of Colorado Cabin Rentals.

Because Telluride is so naturally beautiful, it has plenty of activities in both summer and winters. Just some of these include fly fishing, hiking, snowmobile tours, sledging, snowshoeing and nature spotting.

The town itself is very atmospheric. It was a former Victorian mining town and is full of historic houses and landmarks such as the Sheridan Opera House which has operated as a performing arts centre since 1913.

The town is more understated and less glitzy than Aspen and Vail, but when it comes to the things that matter for skiing, it has an incredible selection of great runs for all standards of skiing, fabulous restaurants and a lack of crowds that is hard to beat.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Steamboat Springs is without a doubt one of Colorados top ski and mountain destinations. There are many good reasons for this. The town of Steamboat is steeped in wild west and ranching history. It has a beautiful and atmospheric town centre augmented by genuinely friendly and welcoming locals. Steamboat Springs is easy to access via the Yampa Valley Regional Airport which is just 22 miles away from the town.

Steamboat Springs also boasts one of the biggest and best ski mountains not only in the United States but also in the world. The area serviced by eighteen ski lifts including a gondola and six high-speed chair lifts offers 2,960 acres of terrain, 165 ski trails and 3,668 feet of vertical as well as plenty of off terrain options.

Forty-two per cent of the ski trails are blue making the mountain ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers. There is also a significant number of single diamond black runs to stretch those wishing to improve or do something more challenging. It is for this reason that Steamboat Springs is extremely popular for family ski vacations. For the expert skiers in the family, some tremendous double-diamond black runs challenge even the most seasoned of skiers as well as gated access to some off terrain skiing famous for its champagne powder.

It is important to note that the town of Steamboat has its location 3 miles from the base of the ski mountain. Many of the luxury Colorado Chalets provide complimentary shuttle services.

Of course, Steamboat Springs is not only about the ski mountain. There are a wide variety of wonderful things to do and see. Some of these include golf, hiking, mountain biking, tubing down the Yampa River, horseback riding, rock climbing,

Burgess Creek Beach, Kid's adventure club, wagon rides, mini-golf, hot air balloons, fishing, shopping, kayaking, rafting, wakeboarding and paddleboarding. Besides, Steamboat Springs has some beautiful events and festivals each year from concerts to the cowboy Downhill and the Steamboat Pro Rodeo Series.

ASPEN

Aspen has the reputation of being the most glamorous of all of the Colorado Ski Towns. It is where you might expect to see many familiar faces and celebrity visitors. It was initially an old silver mining town, and the original part of that town is called Ajax which has its location at the foot of the Aspen Mountain.

The Aspen Ski area comprises of four interlinked towns which include Aspen itself, Ajax, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands. Snowmass is the largest of the four towns and is also slightly further away from the main Aspen base. They are all however linked by a highly efficient shuttle bus service.

Aspen's glamourous reputation is for a good reason. The town is beautiful and at night is lit by thousands upon thousands of tiny twinkling lights, creating an incredibly romantic atmosphere. The centre of town is full of high end-restaurants and designer shops. One of the hallmarks of the town is the Wheeler Opera House built in 1889 and today is a local history museum.

But Aspen is not just about glamour and fine dining. It has an incredibly diverse and expansive ski area suitable for all standards of skiers. The most challenging area is around Ajax, but Aspen Highlands also has a right amount of challenging terrain. The Snowmass area is enormous and will keep everyone happy no matter what their skill level as it has a good amount of beginners and intermediate runs as well as some tremendous double black diamonds. Or course in keeping with the glamourous image of Aspen, it has many of the most luxurious and best of the Colorados vacation rentals have their location here. We highly recommend Aspen for any clients who like the finer things in life.
