Surrounded by tranquil white sandy beaches and the calm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, St Kitts has the most incredible natural beauty. Just 18 miles long and 5 miles wide, uncrowded and unspoiled, St Kitts is one of the friendliest islands in the Caribbean.
The federation of St Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country that lies approximately 19 degrees north of the equator. St Kitts and Nevis are regarded as one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets with their quiet golden beaches, warm turquoise waters and warm local charm.
St Kitts is the larger of the two islands and its capital Basseterre is where the Robert L Bradshaw’s international airport is located. Getting to St Kitts has never been easier. Flights from the USA (New York, Atlanta, Charlotte and Miami) and Canada (Toronto) touchdown daily. From Europe, the island now welcomes U.K flights as well as Germany and France.
St Kitts is a well-balanced island, to the north you have a spectacular rain forest which stands at the foot of Mount Liamiuga (3,790 ft). If hiking is one of your strengths, I certainly encourage to trek this dormant volcano … it is quite a rewarding challenge. Another adventurous way to discover St Kitts is by driving a 4X4 around the island. View the many beautiful waterfalls, hidden reefs, lush tropical gardens and colourful birds en route. Why not stop off along the way to try your hand at zip lining. As a quarter of St Kitts is a national park, you will be able to explore the very soul of this enchanted island.
Kittitian Hill is a new development located in the northern part of the island and well worth a stay or even to visit for lunch or dinner. The idea was to create a community where guests can immerse themselves in the vibrant beauty of the West Indies, enjoy fresh food foraged from the land and sea, and connect with the rich culture of its residents. Staying at the resort is such an experience, to walk out the front door of your guesthouse and pick a pineapple from the ground and eat it is a joy to behold. They even have their own 18 hole “edible” golf course- a first in the world !!
To the south and east of St Kitts is where you will find the best beaches with excellent snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities. Many of our St Kitts vacation rentals are located in this area also. The South Coast is where you will find powdered sands, breath-taking scenery and plenty activities for the whole family to enjoy. Trade winds are a famous feature of the weather here and give the island a delightful tropical climate.
There is so much pack into your days while on the island you will need a vacation after your vacation. Sea lovers will have to try their hand at sailing a yacht, deep sea diving, snorkelling, surfing, kite surfing or offshore fishing. If it’s just peace and tranquillity, you are after this can be found on a comfy sun lounger on one of the many golden beaches such as Major’s, South Friars or Frigates Bay.
St Kitts is truly a very beautiful island, with lots of art, activities, nightlife, music, history and some of the best restaurants to be found in the Caribbean. With it’s rich volcanic soil, agriculture thrives in St Kitts so be sure to sample some if it’s hearty dishes such as roast pig, Rikkita beef, and goat stew. With two coastlines to fish from you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to seafood. Tuna, shrimp, kingfish, lobster, flying fish and red snapper are a daily catch and pair them with fresh locally grown vegetables make a beautiful dish. The food on the islands speaks to an important part of their local culture, which is great to know before you travel.
Basseterre, which is the island's capital, isn’t all that big so very easy to navigate your way around. It has two centres “The Circus” which is geared towards tourists and has daily markets where all types’ fresh fruits, vegetables and local artwork can be purchased. The second centre is where the Government buildings and courthouse are located, and this is called “Independence Square”. Basseterre has a large ferry port where cruise liner docks during the high season. Ferries also run to Nevis from here, this journey takes about 40 minutes, and it’s an island worth visiting.
