Things to do in Punta Mita
DIVING AND SNORKELLING
The best time to enjoy the wonderful Scuba Diving and Snorkelling in Punta Mita is in the summer or autumn where you will find excellent visibility together with very calm seas all in wonderfully warm waters. You can expect to see turtles, dolphins, lobsters, mantas and lots of tropical fish as well as the migrating humpback whales between the months of December and April.
Punta Mita is famous for its whale watching. Between the months of December and March, the huge humpback whales which can reach up to 55 feet in length pass through Banderas Bay as they migrate south. They are truly magnificent animals displaying an amazing grace for such large animals. On occasion they come right up to the visiting boats and rub against them.
DEEP SEA FISHING
Banderas Bay which is over two miles in depth and has a diameter of 25 miles provides some of the best deep sea fishing in the world. You will be able to find Marlin, tuna, Amberjack, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Dorado to name a few. Charted boats and expert captains are available to guide both experienced fishers and novices to the best spots in the area.
The currents on the northern tip of Bahia de Banderas create excellent and sometimes challenging conditions for sailing. There are some wonderful landscapes to enjoy especially around the wonderful Marietas Islands. Luxury sailboats are available for group outings or private charters. Visitors love to go for a sunset cruise or seek out one of the many beautiful beaches along the Banderas coastline
One of the most exciting day trips from Punta Mita is a visit to the Marietas Islands located right off the tip of Punta Mita. Here you will be able to enjoy one of the most wonderful marine ecosystems in the world that includes dolphins, sea turtles and giant manta rays. These incredible islands hide the most beautiful underwater landscape making it the perfect place for scuba diving, snorkelling and paddle boarding. Then there is the incredible and completely unique hidden beach to enjoy. For bird watchers there’s a fascinating flock of migratory blue footed booby sea birds to enjoy. The Marietas which are completely uninhabited were recently declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
The famous scientist Jacques Cousteau visited the Marietas in the late 1960’s and was largely responsible for making the islands a national park which has protected them from fishing, hunting and human habitation.
Another trip well worth making is a visit to the lovely picturesque fishing village of Sayulita which is located just 25 minutes north of Punta Mita. In Sayulita you will also find some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.
Mexico has a wonderful equestrian tradition. For hundreds of year the Charros or cowboys have been riding all over the beautiful countryside. Now it is possible for visitors to Punta Mita to enjoy the same wonderful scenery. With the aid of experienced guides, you will be able to enjoy the wonderful hillsides, beaches and valleys. For Polo enthusiasts the La Patrona Polo Club in the nearby town of San Pancho has weekly matches and tournaments in season. There is even a polo school for anyone who wants to learn the sport.
Kayaking is a great way to explore Punta Mita’s sea life where you will have an opportunity to explore the humpback whales, dolphins and sea turtles.
Punta Mita has been famous for its surfing since the 1970’s. There are more than a dozen spots to board and ride the waves and more sites in the nearby town of Sayulita.
