Claughton House is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic five-bedroom oceanfront villas. This exquisite villa has its location on the southern shores of Sri Lanka overlooking the picturesque surf of Kudawella Bay. It is a beautiful colonial home with stunning views and exquisite rambling walled gardens. The gardens lead down to a lovely swimming pool and a naturally beautiful tropical beach.

Kudawella Bays is perfect for romantic walks and early morning runs on the firm sand. It is also an excellent spot for surfing in season. The beach is a perfect crescent shape and its possible to walk the whole way to Kudawella Harbour and Kudawella fish market. One of Sri Lanka's most famous landmarks is directly on the beach, which is the Kudawella blowhole, widely considered the second largest blowhole in the world. There are several local bars and restaurants walking distance from Claughton House although most guests are reluctant to leave the fantastic cuisine prepared by the excellent chef Ajith at Claughton house each day!

You reach Claughton House via a meandering private drive that passes ancient Banyan trees, swaying palms and lush green tropical shrubs and flowers. The original colonial owners family crest sits over the front door evoking feelings of times past. Claughton House was designed by famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa who created a truly stunning beach house that beautifully complements the surrounding nature. There is a narrow hall which leads to the upper terrace which inturn reveals tantalizing views of the coconut plantation, manicured lawns, inviting swimming pool and the sandy bay at Kudawella.

Designed across three levels, Claughton House takes full advantage of the spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, gardens and swimming pool. The entrance level is home to three of the villas beautiful en-suite bedrooms and the fully equipped kitchen. The main dining area has it’s location on the upper terrace, ensuring breathtaking views for the lucky occupants while at the same time enjoying delicious freshly made food cooked by the Claughton House chef.

Claughton House has five bedroom suites, each with air-conditioning, overhead fans and en-suite bathrooms. The Master suite and two further suites have their location in the main house. Each of these suites has beautiful outdoor showers and small courtyards with seating areas. The fourth and fifth bedrooms have their positions in the gardens of Claughton House. They are adjoining and comprise of one king-sized double bedroom which has a private sun terrace and a twin bedroom with two single beds. The twin room has a flat screened satellite television or cinema area and a table tennis table. Each of the bedrooms has coffee making facilities, mini-fridges and blue tooth speakers.

Beautiful open stone steps bring you to the main living area. The main living area is open on two sides to the gardens and provides a beautiful indoor-outdoor living experience. The living area is exceptionally luxurious, as well as being wonderfully relaxed. It has several different sitting areas with seats, benches, sofas and bean bags. Each of these is cleverly placed to take advantage of unique vantage points over the gardens and ocean.

The walled gardens at Claughton House deserve a special mention for there exquisite beauty. The rolling green lawns interspersed with swaying palm trees, tropical flowers of every colour, stone pathways, beautiful water features and ancient stone walls are stunning. The gardens are full of seats, benches and hammocks which float around the garden offering relaxation and vantage points to enjoy the incredible views as well as the breathtaking Sri Lanka sunsets and sunrises. The swimming pool has its location beside the ocean and is quiet and peaceful. The pool is unique in its shape and cut into the cliff with exposed rock at one end.

There is a Gazebo for casual pool dining, fridge, barbeque and outdoor shower. The Gazebo is the perfect place to enjoy long leisurely lunches accompanied by an ice-cold bottle of Rose before luxuriating on one fo the super comfortable sunbeds that surround the swimming pool. The Indian Ocean and beach appear to be a natural extension of the gardens and pool.

The other beautiful amenities of Claughton House include a massage room and yoga shala. The Shala has its location at the top of the house, ensuring stunning views of the ocean, providing ease of union of the mind and body. Guests are encouraged to practice on their own or use one of the highly qualified local yoga teachers. Yoga mats are available. The team at Claughton House can arrange a massage teacher to visit at any time.

One of the most authentic experiences of any stay at Claughton House is receiving a Buddhist Blessing. The blessing takes place underneath the giant Banyan Tree, which is a shrine to Lord Buddha. Local monks lead the Buddhist blessing. Even if you are not a Buddhist, receiving a blessing from these kind and gentle monks is an enlightening and wonderful experience. The sounds of chanting while you sit under the shade of the magnificent ancient tree are genuinely magical.

Another unique experience of a stay at Claughton House is to witness a local dance troupe perform. Expect backflips, dancing, drumming and fire. Tradition has it that the dancing cured the then King from a mysterious illness. The dance gained further Buddhist significance when dancers were assigned to the Temple of The Tooth. It is a beautiful pre-dinner experience.

Internationally trained Chef Ajith welcomes guests to Claughton House with a freshly prepared juice, a cold towel and a huge smile. This welcome is just the beginning of your journey. You will then be introduced to the rest of the team handpicked for their professionalism and warmth. Following a tour of the property, Chef Ajith will sit down with you and discuss your meal plans for the duration of your stay.

Designed to suit every palate, the food at Claughton House time is served at a time and location of your choosing. Ajith is passionate about food and visits the local market each day to handpick up the freshest and best ingredients possible. He invites guests to join him if they wish and in doing so getting to experience a bit of real Sri Lankan life. Ajith has expertise in both Western and Sri-Lankan food.

Of course, Sri Lankan food is famous for being healthy and delicious, and one of the highlights of a trip to Claughton House is learning from Aijith how to make a real authentic Sri Lankan curry.

Bedroom 3: Twin Room with extra bed. May be made up as a triple with two beds, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, coffee making facility, mini-fridge, blue tooth speakers, en-suite bathroom with outdoor shower and sitting area. Bedroom 2 is a beautiful light corner room with floor to ceiling windows that open up to nature outside. It has beautiful views of the ocean and gardens.


Bedroom 4: King bed, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, coffee making facility, mini-fridge, blue tooth speakers, en-suite bathroom. Bedroom 4 has a beautiful private sun terrace.

Claughton House has a beautiful location in an elevated position overlooking the stunning Bay at Kudawella and beside the town of Dikwella. It also has views out to Kudawella Fishing harbour and the Blowhole. The blowhole at Kudawella is the only known one in Sri Lanka and considered to be the second-largest in the world. The larger town of Tangalla is also close.

Kudawell Beach is a wide bay with white sands and ideal for early morning runs or romantic strolls. The sand is particularly firm, making it easy for both. There is also fantastic surfing during the season. For avid surfers, the Bay of Hirketya is excellent for surfing throughout the year and is a short tuk-tuk ride from Claughton House.

A slighter longer drive is Rekawa Beach which is one of the best spots for Turtle watching. Between April and September, Hawksbill turtles and occasionally leatherback turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Tagalle also has a Turtle Conservation Project.

If you are interested in Sri Lanka culture, a visit to Wewrukannala Buduraja Temple 3 kilometers from Claughton House is a must. It is an impressive and architecturally beautiful 18th Century Buddhist temple. The temple is the location for Sri Lankas highest Buddha statue and stupa.
Animal lovers will love a visit to the Uda Walawe National Park. It is full of herds of buffalo, sambar deer, elephants and masses fo tropical birds. Uda Walawe, which is 75 kilometers from Claughton House, is considered by many to be better than East African Parks.
