Punta Mita Luxury Rentals

If you’re a film buff, you will know that The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is an old Humphrey Bogart western. If you’re an informed international traveller with exquisite taste, you will know that the actual treasure of the Sierra Madre is, in fact, Punta Mita.

Punta Mita Aerial View of beach

This resort, which spreads languidly across the Pacific coastline of Mexico, gets its name from the old Aztec word “mictlan”, which translates as ‘gateway to paradise’. From the terrace of any of the divine Exceptional Villas Punta Mita villas, you’ll be in no doubt as to the accuracy of this statement. You have indeed found Paradise! Located at the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, less than an hour north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport, lies the exclusive resort town of Punta Mita.

It commands one of the most desirable locations in the Americas and is quite rightly considered one of the world’s sophisticated and beautiful international destinations. Lucky visitors are assured of finding a haven of spectacular natural beauty with luxurious properties dotted along its coastline.

Punta Mita is situated on the tip of Bahia de Banderas, one of the world’s largest naturally formed bays. It is fringed by nine miles of pristine white sandy beaches, each overlooking the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Pacific. The sheltered soaring peaks of the impressive Sierra Madre Mountains create a dramatic backdrop.

This exclusive corner of Mexico has become the go-to destination for travellers who want a vacation that’s all about beauty and luxury: breath-taking surroundings, gorgeous resorts with so many fabulous Punta Mita luxury villas, all designed to woo the senses.

Who goes to Punta Mita?

There are many facets to Punta Mita. It charms various groups for so many different reasons. The rich and famous set do love to capture stylish selfies with a golden Pacific sunset as a backdrop. Romantic honeymooners love the fully-loaded resorts where one of the Punta Mita Four Season’s villas, for example, can cater to their every need. Families with little children love the array of Punta Mita Mexico vacation rentals with private pools that allow them to establish a home-from-home atmosphere.

Punta Mita Beach

Groups made up of multi-generational travellers or couples are drawn to the diverse activities available in and around this beautiful resort town. Travellers who enjoy energetic activities like hiking, biking or horse riding find the trails that meander through the hills behind Punta Mita, a limitless playground. For the more sedate, there are wonderful wellness services that help fast-track your own brand of deep relaxation. And, of course, the water.

There isn’t a visitor to Punta Mita that isn’t lured by the call of the ocean. With year-round warm and temperate conditions and a quirky coastline made up of long, long stretches of beach interspersed with islands and cute coves, the Pacific never ceases to entertain and mesmerise.

Activities

The exclusive resort of Punta Mita offers much for the active traveller. You can explore the colourful reef structures just off-shore. Snorkelling or scuba diving are regular features of any Punta Mita vacation. If you prefer to stay in the boat, you can enjoy the unexpected joy of watching dolphins and whales as they put on a memorable floorshow.

Golf

On land, there’s some pretty impressive golf available. If you are staying at one of the luxury Punta Mita Four Seasons villas, you can enjoy a round on one or both of the Jack Nicklaus courses. Punta Mita Bahia Golf Course is a panoramic links course. Rivalled by its sister course, Punta Mita Pacifico that features the Tail of the Whale – the only natural island green in the world – accessible at low tide. In between exciting golf or tennis, you can enjoy a signature spa treatment – a tequila and sage hot stone treatment – in the lush Four Season’s Spa, it might have your name on it!

Surfing

The weather in Punta Mita is near perfect. It is situated on the same latitude as Hawaii , which means that it has year-round warm and balmy weather. Like Hawaii, it has established itself as one of the top surfing destinations in the Pacific. The geography of the coastline that sweeps upwards from Puerto Vallarta to Punta Mita has created the perfect conditions for long and shortboard surfing.

Just north of Punta Mita is Sayulita, the recognised home of surfing in Mexico. It’s a big feature of life along the coastline, and you will find numerous surf shops and tutors who can introduce a beginner to the joy of catching a wave.

Nightlife

Regardless of your age, there’s a lot of safe fun to be had after dark. Everything from traditional restaurants with live music to Salsa clubs will get your feet tapping. Chic beach sidebars and open-air restaurants, festooned with lights, are great places to while away an evening. DJ’s spin some good sounds at the cool beach clubs, a great warmer-upper before a terrific night out. The nearby surf towns offer a younger and more casual party vibe, fun places to enjoy dinner before hitting the lively bars.

If you have younger children, they will love destinations like Mita Mary Boat Bar and Bistro. Parents can devour scrumptious tacos and a margarita or two while the kids play within view on the beach in front of the restaurant. The good news, though, is that the Punta Mita party experience is pretty low key. The town has maintained its status as a luxurious haven that attracts those who enjoy a sociable vacation but without too much raucous fanfare. You’ll find what you want here - the perfect location to enjoy a luxury vacation to Mexico.

Under the water

The best time to enjoy the wonderful Scuba Diving and Snorkelling in Punta Mita is in the summer or autumn. This is when visibility beneath the waves is at its best due to the calmer sea. As well, the waters are at their warmest at this time of year. You can expect to see turtles, dolphins, lobsters, mantas and lots of tropical fish as well.

On the Water

Punta Mita is famous for its whale watching. Between the months of December and March, the huge humpback whales, which can reach up to 55 feet in length, pass through Banderas Bay as they migrate south. Nothing will ever prepare you for the sight of one of these gentle giants as they breach the surface. These fellow mammals are truly magnificent creatures.

Sailing

The currents on the northern tip of Bahia de Banderas create excellent and sometimes challenging conditions for sailing. There are some wonderful landscapes to enjoy, especially around the wonderful Marietas Islands. Luxury sailboats are available for group outings or private charters. Visitors love to go for a sunset cruise or seek out one of the many beautiful beaches along the Banderas coastline.

Kayaking

The topography of the coastline, along with the good in-shore sea conditions, can make Kayaking a great way to see Punta Mita’s from the water. Any of the kayak rental shops will advise on the sea and wind conditions. Better yet, join a kayak tour that’s led by experienced locals. You will always find so many more hidden gems in this way.

Surfing

Punta Mita has been famous for its surfing since the 1970s. There are more than a dozen spots to board and ride the waves. A really memorable day out is a visit to the attractive fishing village of Sayulita, which is located just 25 minutes north of Punta Mita. This village brings all the best-loved aspects of Mexico together – the colour, the flavours, the architecture - in a very laid-back surf town. Some of the most perfect beaches in Mexico run along this coastline. Even if you don’t know one end of a surfboard from another, you can enjoy a ringside seat on the beach as you watch the experts weave in and out of the breakers.

Fishing

Banderas Bay which is over two miles in depth and has a diameter of 25 miles, provides some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world. You will be able to find Marlin, Tuna, Amberjack, Sailfish, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Dorado, to name a few. Charted boats with experienced skippers can be booked who will guide both experienced fishermen and novices to the best spots in the area.

Island Hopping

One of the most exciting day trips from Punta Mita is a visit to the Marietas Islands located right off the tip of Punta Mita. Here you will be able to enjoy one of the most unspoiled marine ecosystems in the world. There’s a world of sea life that lives and moves around these protected waters. Expect to see dolphins, sea turtles and giant manta rays. The conditions are perfect for scuba diving, snorkelling or paddle boarding.

Punta Mita Island Hopping

Hidden beaches and deserted coves can be visited where you will be the only human beings—the ultimate castaway experience. For keen bird watchers, there’s a fascinating flock of migratory blue-footed booby sea birds to look for. The famous scientist Jacques Cousteau visited the Marietas in the late 1960s and was largely responsible for making the islands a national park. Recently, UNESCO has declared The Marietas islands a Biosphere Reserve, which will ensure its continued uninhabited state. All flora and fauna found in and around the islands are now safely protected.

Horse Heaven

Mexico has a wonderful equestrian tradition. For hundreds of years, the Charros or cowboys have been a feature of this dramatic and beautiful countryside. Now it is possible for visitors to Punta Mita to take on the persona of a Charros for the day – with or without the sombrero - and enjoy the same wonderful scenery.

With the aid of experienced guides, you will be matched with a suitable horse and can set out to explore the nearby hillsides, beaches and valleys.

If you like a more formal equestrian event, why not arrange for a day out to La Patrona Polo Club in the nearby town of San Pancho. They host weekly matches and tournaments in the season. There is even a polo school for anyone who wants to learn the sport.

A vacation with flavour

So first of all, you’re in Mexico. I emphasise this as sometimes, when you’re in one of the luxury vacation rentals Punta Mita offers, you might for a minute think you could be in any incredible corner of the world. But pretty soon, all of the wonderful features of a glorious Mexican vacation reveal themselves. Let’s start with the food. With a huge farming hinterland on one side and a wide ocean on the other, the restaurants are overflowing with the best, locally sourced ingredients.

Punta Mita Lounge Area

If you have a chef at your disposal in one of the Punta Mita villas you are renting, they will be able to prepare delicious dinners that bring together the memorable flavours of Mexico. Dishes like fish tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas all sit side by side with a wide array of local cakes and sweets. Delicious coffee or local beers like Dos Equis, can be part of long lazy days by your pool. Why not blend some fabulous chilled cocktails with a variety of local fruits, adding a dash of some tequila for over older guests.

Throughout the resort town, there are restaurants that offer dining options that step away from the local fare. Thai inspired The Spice Market or sushi from Aramara in the Four Seasons are a nice change of pace. For a great lunch on the beach, try El Barracuda Punta Mita. Casual food and delicious cocktails before you walk it all off across the long stretch of sand.
