Events on St Martin 2014

St. Martin is renowned for its 37 beautiful beaches, fantastic food and warm climate.  It is the only Caribbean island to share two nations both French and Dutch. The perfect island for a vacation, at Exceptional Villas we have the most luxurious villas in St. Martin to choose from. Here is a rundown of some of the exciting upcoming events on St Martin 2014.

Best for Sailors & Spectators

The 34th Annual St. Maarten Heineken Regatta takes place from the 6th to the 9th of March in 2014. Participants and spectators spend the long weekend enjoying a world-class competition between racing sailboats from all across the globe. This is one of St. Martin’s biggest events since it first began in 1980. It is not just regatta lovers that come to visit this event, it also hosts some serious parties and past musical entertainment includes artists such as The Black Eyed Peas and Wyclef Jean playing the headliners stages on Kim Sha beach.

Best for Fun & Families

The St. Martin Billfish Tournament will take place from the 10th to the 14th of June in 2014. It started in 1997 when the founders wanted to create an event that would attract teams from around the Caribbean and local fishermen on the island. There are many awards handed out but the big one is the record prize which is awarded to the captain and crew of the boat that catches the biggest fish weighing at least 1 pound more in weight than the current record of 809 pounds.

Best for Parties & Revellers

Carnival is celebrated on both the French and the Dutch side of the island at separate times. The French St. Martin Carnival begins in early January and continues through to the culmination on Ash Wednesday each year. It includes a final parade and the ‘Burning of King Carnival Vival’ on a funeral pyre. The St. Maarten festival on the Dutch side runs throughout April and includes parades and events on the streets of Phillipsburg.

Best for Foodies & Wine Lovers

Fete de La Cuisine is St. Martin’s culinary festival and it takes place over a week in October or November each year. While 2014 dates are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to live up to all expectations. The 2013 programme included 5 top European Chefs, all of whom had a Michelin star. Another event to note on St. Martin is the Beaujolais Nouveau. This is an annual wine tasting event that is held in bars and restaurants to celebrate the release of this young wine on the third Thursday in November. It originates in Paris and 60 million bottles of this new vintage are distributed worldwide each year. Vintners and distributors around the world work quickly to get their hands on some and release to the bistros and the bars of the world. Beaujolais Nouveau is typically meant to be consumed within the first year of release and is certainly not a wine that is intended for ageing.
